As we head into the final month of winter, the Middletown High School wrestling team will be wrapping up their season.  According to a NFHS news letter, wrestling as a high school sport has become increasingly popular in the past 10 years, especially among girls. With a strong start to the pre-season, the team is now heading to compete in league and regional matches. With championships coming up on the calendar, athletes are starting to prepare for the more exciting part of the season.

Senior Athlete and star wrestler, Alivia Stark is currently getting ready for league. Alivia has been wrestling for 2 years now and as this will be her final run with the team, she is putting in her all, and hoping to go to state. This year she has had 15 wins to 3 losses, 2 of the 3 being male, who will not be her opponents in the final matches. During an interview, Stark mentions there being a lot of new people this season. “Collectively there’s a lot of new people on the team, a lot of first years.” Stark says. “I think we did really good for what we are starting with.”

With all the fresh faces, and even though the Coach being brand new to the Middletown team, there was an uncertainty of how that year would pan out. Despite this, their performance has been amazing, with Middletown dominating most matches during the pre-season.

The last of the season now will be split into 4 big meets, all qualifications for State. League meets will be individuals competing against people in their county. Those who medal in league will go to Sectional, and those who place at Sectional go to Masters. At Masters, the best athletes will be qualified for State. This Friday, February 6th, Willits High School will be hosting the league championship. This is where Middletown’s wrestling Team’s willpower and motivation will be determined.
