A Cinderella Story: Movie Review

A Cinderella Story, released in Summer of 2004, starring Hilary Duff, Chad Michael Murray, and Jennifer Coolidge is a treasured classic. The Cinderella “franchise” is known for its universal theme, proving kindness and love. A Cinderella Story features Sam Montgomery, a 17 year old high school senior, whose father passed away when she was just 10 years old. Following the Cinderella story line, she has no choice but to live with her ‘evil’ step mother and step siblings. Sam is seen as the maid, always cleaning, always fixing supper, and is always treated poorly. In her free-time, she uses a digital chat room, communicating with one anonymous user, ‘Nomad’. Sam goes on a long journey with her mysterious lover and dreads to reveal who she really is.

Hilary Duff has starred in other movies such as the highly popular movie, The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003). Duff was the perfect role for this movie. She has a bubbly personality and the brightest smile. Chad Michael Murray has starred in other film entertainment such as Freaky Friday (2003) and Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003); he is everyone’s favorite romantic. Played as a high school jock, his charming appeal was perfect

for Sam Montgomery’s secret admirer. As well as Jennifer Coolidge, another actress, who has been in a variety of comedy and drama movies. Coolidge normally has that high-maintenance, sassy personality which is strong for her role as the ‘evil’ step mother.

This film is filled with mixed emotions; including cheesy 2000’s behavior, it could not be for everyone. One iconic line from the film both myself and other people love is "Waiting for you is like waiting for rain in this drought. Useless and disappointing.” It proves how blinded Austin is from him and Sam’s love. The drought refers to the San Fernando Valley, and viewers will understand the symbolism by the end of the film.

I feel as if this movie deserved all of its awards. Hilary Duff was not nominated once, but twice for the Kids’ and Teen Choice Awards in 2005. To include, Murray was nominated for his Movie Breakout Star, for those who gain popularity, and Coolidge won the Choice Movie Sleazebag, for having a very manipulative, shady character.

Though there is a little swearing and flirtation, it is rated PG. I give A Cinderella Story an overall 4-star rating. I feel as if there are more teen/adult acts rather than something for little kids. Young viewers will be bored and parents will most likely not enjoy the behavior or language. It is very humorous, including some adult jokes. I am very fond of all four Cinderella movies, and this is my top favorite, besides Selena Gomez’s Another Cinderella Story (2008). This movie is watchable on Prime Video, Youtube, & Apple TV. I recommend this movie to those who enjoy corny story lines and teen flings.
