On Saturday, October 11th, 2025--in the National Julio Martínez Prádanos stadium in Chile-- Argentina faced off with Mexico during the U20 world cup quarter final match, leaving winners with a score of 2-0.
Argentina has dominated over Mexico, winning 16 of their 32 meetings and winning all four of their FIFA matches. Argentina's star players, Maher Carrizo and Mateo Silvetti both scored goals in their 2-0 victory.
The last match between these two countries ended the exact same way during the Qatar 2022 World Cup quarterfinals where Argentina’s all-time leading goal scorer Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández secured a 2-0 win for Argentina’s national team aka “La Albiceleste”.
Argentina has currently secured their spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026, and is finishing at the top of the CONMEBOL qualifying group.

While he still hasn’t made a decision, star Lionel Messi might be playing in the 2026 World Cup, despite his age. He will decide after finishing his current placement in the MLS season according to The New York Times.
Argentina is now preparing to play against Morocco on October 19th at the same stadium for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup Final. If Morocco secures this victory, they are looking at a historical win and bringing home a trophy for the first time. However, if La Albiceleste wins, the reigning world champions will be taking their seventh title since 2007 and maintaining their 2022 title.
According to one anonymous Mexico fan, they thought the experimentation in switching player placement, referencing Diego Sanchez as well as benching key players on Mexico's side was a poor judgment call and part of the reason Argentina won. “There were consequences for Mexico's section. They know Argentina is world dominating in soccer and they made lots of errors despite this,” the life long fan states.
Mexico has been competing since 1930 with a successful and strong team, defeating Brazil, France and Morocco and winning multiple titles. Despite this, they have never passed the quarterfinals.
