AI and its Negative Impact on Students

In recent years, especially as of this year, AI seems to have taken over in many fields. For instance, in schools many students have resorted to AI to cheat and have very questionable academic credibility. In some ways, AI has been proven to be helpful when it comes to efficiency and convenience, but I don’t believe students being surrounded and allowed so much access to it will be beneficial later on. When it comes to the point where you are going to actually have to do things on your own, you won’t know how to because you’ve relied too much on AI to generate and do your work for you. 

In recent studies, it has been shown that AI is being used not as much for learning but to avoid learning. According to USC Today, “College students are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT to get quick answers rather than deepen their understanding, a new national survey finds. To understand how college students are using AI tools like ChatGPT, the researchers surveyed 1,000 U.S. college students and found that most use AI for what researchers call “executive help” — seeking fast solutions with minimal effort.” 

You can see here that college students using AI often are only searching for a quick way to get the answer and aren’t really learning anything from the material they’re being given. Essentially, the answers are just being handed to them.

Though there are many disadvantages to AI, there are also many advantages. It can be a time saver, it’s available pretty much all the time, and it can also reduce the amount of errors a person would make.

Even though there are benefits, I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Pretty much everyone who has ChatGPT today uses it for answers, and to get information as quickly as possible instead of doing it themselves. It definitely has more of a negative impact rather than a positive one when it comes to the growth of a person's knowledge.
