DUI Accidents: The Facts & Facing Reality
By Lupita Cabrera
There are many car crashes due to many different circumstances. Some may be an accidental hit or scratch that will come down to an insurance claim, in other circumstances like a hit and run, intentional crash, or getting a DUI will most likely lead to jail time. If you're involved in a hit and run, also considered as leaving the scene, without giving the car you hit your contact information or notifying the police it is considered a crime.
This is a situation where you can get punished with around 6 to 12 months of jail time. Another thing is that if there were any injuries that had occurred in the hit and run it would be considered a felony carrying up to 3 years or more in Federal State Prison. If you're just being a reckless driver or have it out for someone and intentionally crash into them you aren't showing any respect of safety for others and you can be charged for vehicular assault. It is obviously considered a crime when you're putting yourself and others lives at risk and it will result in jail time. Driving under the influence, if you are in a car accident that involves you being drunk or under the influence of other drugs the crime's punishment is multiplied. It's considered manslaughter when you're intoxicated and involved with a car accident. Not only are you getting yourself into big trouble but you can also get others in trouble, for example there is a state law called the Dram Shop law which states that if a restaurant or bar sees a customer intoxicated or getting too intoxicated and allows them to leave on their own and that intoxicated person gets into an accident then the cops can back track and the restaurant or bar can get in trouble too for allowing someone, that can create an accident to leave their vicinity in those conditions.
When driving under the influence of alcohol, Dui crashes, it causes thousands of deaths or people being injured every year, if you're driving under the influence that shows huge signs of having bad health issues. Getting a DUI can cause you long term consequences beyond just physical harm, harming communities, families and others lives that are being greatly impacted. DUI crashes are caused by the effect that alcohol takes on your body and the same goes with drugs, it messes with your nervous system, it slows your brain down and the way it functions. Your body does not coordinate properly with alcohol in your system, it won't react properly or quickly know how to change your direction or move when driving a vehicle and you can lead to crashing because of that. While being intoxicated your body will respond differently than how it normally would and that makes it very dangerous to operate a vehicle. Mixing alcohol and driving is a deadly combination, literally. It will lead to reckless driving especially if you're speeding you can lose control easily.
If you're under the influence while driving you are more likely to also not follow the regular road regulations and break laws. If you don't get into a car accident you are likely to get pulled over for speeding or your reckless driving and could get caught if you're under the influence and you will be arrested. With the amount of DUI crashes it has created stricter law enforcement and people have started public awareness campaigns along with rehabilitation programs. These changes of being more aware for drunk drivers can cut down the choices people make and can show them to make better choices in their lives, the Public awareness campaigns show and educate people about the dangers that come along with driving intoxicated and the consequences you'd have to go through too. The rehabilitation programs help support those people who are struggling with substance abuse problems to treat them. By addressing the problems of driving under the influence as in general or as a community people can work on reducing the amount of DUI crashes everywhere and create safer roads for people to feel safe and drive safely.

“Teen In Deadly Novato Crash out of hospital; Arrested for DUI, Manslaughter.” Saturday Apr 11, 2026 I woke up this Saturday morning with my step dad yelling at me that we had to go to Santa Rosa immediately. I couldn't understand why the rush and why this early, Then the words came out of his mouth “Your cousin Niko.. he got into a car accident, He died.” We went to Santa Rosa that morning. I saw my aunt, she was doing awful. We stood in a room with all my families. It was quiet but I felt the pain in the room and I still do in my heart. On April 11th 2026 at 1am police were getting many phone calls that a car crashed into a utility pole on San Marin Drive near Simmons Lane. There were five 16-18 year old in the car. Niko Ortiz Vargas, my cousin, was the only one to pass away. The 17 year old driver was arrested for being under the influence of alcohol after getting released from the hospital, he is being booked into juvenile upon his release. The other three passengers were hospitalized with major injuries, there suffering from some enduring critical, life threatening conditions. Police had said that they believe that they were driving eastbound on San Marine Drive when it had crashed into a power pole which had caused the car to spin out of control. In a statement police had said “This loss is a devastating reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence, and we are deeply grateful for the support and assistance shown during this incredibly difficult time.”

When it comes to driving you want to be the safest, there's always a chance of putting someone else's life or your own at risk. It may seem fine in the moment when you're with your friends or when you're partying you may find it cool to be under the influence, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Driving under the influence is so unsafe for yourself and others on the road. It really hurts to lose family, friends, or someone in your community which is why you should never risk taking someone's life or your own.
