Coraline Gets a Little too Curios

Written by: Daisy Rodgers

The movie Coraline, which is directed by Henry Selick, tells the story of a young girl named Coraline Jones. The movie starts with Coraline moving into her new home with her parents. She comes to find this ominous door, which leads to an alternate reality, which at first glance seems to be absolutely perfect and offers everything she could need. But as the movie goes on, Coraline learns that this alternate reality isn’t as perfect as it seems.

This movie always used to scare me as a little kid because I was always scared my mom was going to turn into the other mother. I won’t deny that this movie is perfect for the season of fall and does give you a little spook. Though I believe this movie shouldn’t be shown to kids under the age 12, because I was genuinely scared whenever I used to watch this movie. This movie is a great stop-motion film and has a very eerie and mysterious ambience, which is really fitting for this film. I think this is a great film, although I do get a little spooked by the idea of there being an “Other World” just behind a door in her house, with her same parents, just with button eyes, which is really interesting but also at the same time a little bit unsettling.

As for Coraline, the main character in this film, she is not only independent but also a very brave character, having to get through multiple obstacles to save her parents and return to her normal life, which she so badly wanted to be different at the start of the movie. A quote from the movie that specifically stood out to me was, “Being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t scared. Being Brave means you are scared, but you do the right thing anyway.” Once she realized how good she really had it, she realized that maybe she needed to be more grateful and that she didn’t have it as bad as she thought.

I think that this movie can be really good for someone who likes getting a little spooked, especially in the season of fall season and Halloween. Though I believe that this movie should not be shown to children under the age of 12 because they might think they’re mom may become the other mother as well. All in all, I think this movie is pretty good and offers a very beautiful and otherworldly scenery, while also capturing the things Coraline had to get through to get back to her parents and return to her normal life. I would definitely recommend and I give this movie a 5/5.
