New MHS club weaves its way into our hearts

Updated: Feb 29

Middletown High School has a new club created by Cat Barriga, the Craft & Crochet Club! Everyone is welcome in the club and you do not need any experience. If you have ever thought about trying to crochet but don’t know what to do or where to start, or even if you enjoy crafts and making things in general you might be interested in this club.

Listen for announcements during our daily bulletin and come to Mrs. Pyzer’s to check it out during the meetings and see if it's for you!

There are no fees, charges or materials you need to provide to join the club. Everything is provided from donations! If you would like to donate materials please contact Mr. Evans.

The Craft & Crochet Club is starting off by teaching the members how to start and how to make a chain, he basics of crochet. The club will be learning to crochet hats, scarves, socks and more to donate to the homeless! The club is also learning how to crochet squares that will be combined into a blanket and auctioned off! There will be help from club creator Cat, and other club members to teach people how to crochet as well as tips and tutorials to help everyone learn. Along with crochet, there will be a number of other crafts and projects! The club will be learning how to do T- shirt printing, resin work, making slime, and much more.

Club members will be able to host a craft of their choice for a monthly craft! For monthly crafts, club members will be able to choose a craft or project that they enjoy to introduce and teach the club for the month!

Crochet is a craft similar to kiting, but using a small hook instead of knitting needles to make fabric from loops of yarn creating different patterns and designs. “Crochet, craft that developed in the 19th century out of a form of chain-stitch embroidery done with a hook instead of a needle” With crochet you can make at ton of fun and unique fabric designs, clothing, blankets, baskets, and so much more.

Along with being able to create fun and unique reactions with loops of yarn, there is also many mental benefits to crochet. “The meditative and repetitive action of both knitting and crocheting help to focus the mind on the activity, thereby slowing the nervous system and reducing anxiety and stress hormones (cortisol) in the body.” Studies have also shown that crochet can help you sleep and increase levels of serotonin.

Joining MHS clubs that interest you is a great way to meet new people, and make friends that share your interests! Also participating and hosting during the monthly crafts can be a great thing to put on collage applications! To any student at Middletown High School that is or might be interested in crafts and wants to learn to crochet, we hope you come and check out the crochet and see if it is for you!
