The world waits in growing anticipation as the release date, April 4th 2025, for the Minecraft movie (there doesn’t seem to be a set title for it yet) draws closer and closer. Little is still known about the blocky sandbox game’s first cinematic appearance, this leaves room for some speculation as to what we can possibly expect from the film.
Let’s start of with what we do know about the movie; as far as everyone can tell, the movie will be live action rather than animated.
This is certainly an interesting choice to make for how they are choosing to produce the movie, as live action isn’t typically someone’s first thought when they imagine a movie based on a video game. While there may be some that may believe that going for live action for the movie isn’t the best choice, it’s important not to jump to any conclusions just yet.
One of the move successful video game movies of all time, the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, have been live action (with the help of CGI, of course). It’s reasonable to draw the conclusion that the Minecraft movie will follow this and be live action with CGI elements included, just hopefully without the horrifying CGI monstrosities that the Sonic movie had. Just exactly how the movie will capture Minecraft’s blocky essence that people have come to know and love in live action still remains to be seen.
We also know some of the names attached to the movie, such as the movie’s director, Jared Hess. He is best known for his work on the films Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. While the Minecraft Movie will differ from these two a fair bit, we may be able to expect a similar comedic, lighthearted tone to the ones we saw in those earlier films. This is the best tone for the movie, given Minecraft as a franchise is aimed at all audiences, so it only makes sense for the film to be suitable for all ages.
While we do know some members of the cast, their rolls are currently unknown, aside from one.
Jack Black was recently announced to be joining the Minecraft movie, and will be playing the part of Minecraft’s main character, Steve. The internet has blown up after hearing the news of Jack Black’s role in the film. Jack Black has become famous as an actor in recent years, notably his appearance in the Kung Fu Panda movies, having a role in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, as well as starring in Nacho Libre. He does especially well in more comedic films, which the Minecraft movie may be. Overall Jack Black is an excellent casting choice to play Steve in the Minecraft movie and will help bring a good lighthearted, funny tone.
This is essentially all the information we have on the movie as of recently, but what are some things we can expect (or hope) to see in the movie?
Most obvious are references to the game itself, such as mobs like the creeper, places like the Nether or the End, and there will definitely be references to mining and crafting, the name of the game itself. The movie could also pay homage to the community with inside jokes and potentially YouTubers that helped made the game popular.
The plot is pretty up in the air, since within the Minecraft universe we have seen multiple stories between their properties of Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Legends, and the base game itself, Minecraft. The story could revolve around any one of these, could be based on numerous novels that have been made, or it could be a completely original story.
One thing all those have in common is that they all follow a similar storyline of a great force of evil being stopped by an unlikely hero. It’s a common storyline but the Minecraft movie has an opportunity to take a much more unique approach to it. For example, the force of evil maybe doesn’t have to be so obvious as a singular “bad guy”, they could take the path of redeeming the villain, or perhaps our “unlikely hero” starts off capable already rather than starting from zero like a lot of stories following this plot type.
Any of these could be an interesting way to take the plot, and could be a way to send a good message to viewers, especially since a decent amount of them will likely be on the younger side.
On that note, what can we expect the movies rating to be? The most likely answer is a PG rating, at the highest it will be PG-13. It’s less likely to be the PG-13 rating given that Minecraft is a very family friendly game, so its not likely to get a more mature age rating. Though admittedly, it would be pretty humorous to see Steve from Minecraft drop an F bomb.
Overall the Minecraft movie is shaping up to be a really good and fun film for the whole family. Excitement for the movie is sure to grow more and more as the April 4th, 2025 release date gets closer and closer.
