Kendrick Lamar is certainly the greatest artist of our generation and in my opinion the greatest of all time when it comes to the genre of Rap--his discography certainly attests for my claims. Kendrick is also the greatest storyteller in Rap.
Kendrick Lamar is a musical composer/rapper from Compton, California. Kendrick was born June 17, 1987. Kendrick grew up in a rough environment of Compton surrounded by gang violence and lower class issues such as poverty, racism, and a drug epidemic.
Kendrick Lamar is a very successful artist with multiple awards, he currently has 17 Grammy awards and 37 BET Awards. He's one these awards across 10 projects/albums. His most award winning album is his 2017 album “DAMN”.
“DAMN.” has 5 Grammy awards alone including Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, Best Rap Performance, and finally Best Music Video. This rap album is a masterpiece. This album speaks about Kendricks tough life growing up and the battle of becoming a gang member and living that street life as well as losing many friends in Compton. This album has very different sounds such as trap, contemporary R&B, and pop. This albums contains features from Rihanna, U2, and Zacari. It's a heavily storytelling album with songs such as” DUCKWORTH” which tells a story of how Kendricks father nearly getting killed and robbed by Topdawg , Kendricks label executive. Pitchfork labels this album a 9.2/10 they said
“DAMN. is a widescreen masterpiece of rap.”
Another great album is “To Pimp A Butterfly” released in 2015. This album contains a mixture of Jazz, West Coast Hip-Hop, and Neo Soul G-funk. This album is widely considered the greatest rap album of all time. This album consists of a 16 long song track. Kendrick doesn’t just use small bits of jazz music he makes whole songs with real meaning on a jazz instrumental. This album consists features from unique but truly great artist such as Thundercat, George Cilnton, Anna Wie, Snoop Dogg, James Fauntelory, Rapsody, and Ronald Isley. My personal favorite song on the album is “Alright”. This song has a heavenly beat produced by Pharrel Williams. To Pimp a Butterfly received a 9.3/10 from Pitchfork.
These two major award winning albums staple Kendrick Lamar's true greatness and presence in the rap industry. These two albums have greatly effected my life and my ears and I hope everyone will be able to hear the greatness of these beautiful albums, as well as get to know other Kendrick Lamar albums because his discography is very loaded.
