Pronouns drama escalates in new open world game, ‘Starfield’

Updated: Nov 14, 2023

The highly anticipated game "Starfield" has recently found itself at the center of a heated debate surrounding the inclusion of pronoun options in character customizations. This feature, aimed at promoting inclusivity, has led to divisiveness among gamers, with some users taking offense or decrying it as pandering.

The Origins of the Drama

The pronouns controversy began after one of Starfield's developers revealed that the game would include character customization options that would allow players to select their preferred pronouns. While many gamers expressed satisfaction and support for the decision, considering it an important step towards inclusivity in gaming, others perceived it as forced wokeness or political correctness.

As a result, a rift emerged from within the community as individuals flocked to social media platforms to voice their opinions.

Why People are Getting Mad About It

There are several factors fueling anger and resentment in response to this debate. For some people, adding pronoun options seems like pandering and unnecessary—believing that developers should primarily focus on improving graphics, gameplay mechanics, or other technical features. They argue that such adjustments push unrealistic expectations on society by accommodating what they might consider as marginal or fringe groups.

On the other hand, for those advocating for more inclusive options, they argue that representation is essential for promoting empathy and understanding among gamers. They believe that allowing room for self-expression can foster belongingness within diverse communities.

In both scenarios, individuals may feel threatened or alienated by changes they perceive as contrasting their set beliefs or values. This exacerbates tensions and amplifies reactions surrounding this debate.

A bigger reason people are getting ropeable is not that it's in "starfield" but the fact it's in a large and more known video game. The aspect of having a political or otherwise controversial statement, person or anything as such could create a stir if it's in a larger video game. Other large games that come out might feel more obligated to do the same and it might cause the developers to feel more stressed.

Not only that, but if they don't add whatever controversial or political item it is in their game, it might make more fights between the people that are in agreement with that particular political view and people who aren't--causing even more controversy within the gaming industry.

Broader implications

The starfield pronoun drama demonstrates how identity politics can make their way into multiple aspects of life, including the realm of gaming. The truth is that this debate represents a microcosm of larger societal discussions about inclusivity, representation, and cultural change.

Furthermore, it raises questions about the role of the gaming industry in promoting tolerance and diversity by acknowledging different perspectives while maintaining open dialogue among others.

The recent Starfield pronouns drama has undoubtedly captured public attention leading to intense reactions from both sides. While it may appear…dumb on the surface level, this debate serves as a critical juncture for understanding how society is grappling with questions of identity and inclusivity. It also provides an opportunity for individuals to reflect on their values and examine the ways in which they engage in conversations surrounding culture, equality, and representation, whether inside or outside the gaming world…usually outside–probably on Twitter.
