It's finally spooky season! Days are getting shorter, the air is getting colder and it's the perfect time to bundle up and watch some classic Halloween movies. If you are stuck inside, bored during October you should consider watching one of these movies!
Many new Halloween movies have been made the past few years, but they are incomparable to the classics. Not to mention, movies now are typically just remakes, after remakes, after remakes, so we can't forget the classics. Here are 3 of the most popular, and original Halloween movies you should watch this month.
Number 1: Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus is a fun, spooky, family-friendly movie about a teenage boy learning that the tales of magic in his new town are not just a bunch of ‘Hocus Pocus’. Evil witches, the Sanderson sisters, from 1700’s Salem are freed in the 1990’s with one goal: to abduct children and steal their souls so they could become young again.
Even though it didn’t do too well when it was first released, the movie has since grown in popularity. For instance, and speaking of ‘remakes’,I know you have most likely heard of the new Hocus Pocus 2. If you happened to make the mistake of watching that unfortunate sequel before the original and decided it was dumb, I highly suggest you erase that from your mind and watch the first one.
If you have not seen Hocus Pocus 2, you’re not missing much. 2 teen-age girls in Salem are tricked into freeing the witches... Again.. Basically the same way as last time. The Sanderson sisters, humorously confused by new customs of modern time (2022) yet again attempt to steal the souls of children so they can become immortal. Personally I do not think it was too bad.. but it definitely wasn’t good. I am not sure if it was the incredibly forced and seemingly rushed script and acting, the repeating plot with additional plot holes, or a mixture of the two that made this movie so unbearable. Sure it has its good moments like most movies, I had a few laughs but in the end, it really had me wondering why I just wasted 1 hour and 43 minutes of my life when I could have been watching the original.
Number 2: Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters is a 1980’s supernatural comedy based in New York. A team of scientists who discovered paranormal activity lose their university jobs and decide to start a ghost removal service company named, “The Ghostbusters”. Throughout the movie, they encountered a lot more chaos than they thought they signed up for. Some people may find this movie to be a little slow pace, but I find it to be very entertaining. The 80’s special effects never fail to make me laugh, the plot and ghost busting bond is very fun and amusing.
Although There has been a few new ghostbuster movies, specifically three. Including ‘Ghostbusters 2’ The sequel following the destruction and aftermath of the original movie. A 2016 Ghostbusters remake starring a group of woman scientists instead of men. And ‘Ghostbusters, Afterlife’, the newest ghostbusters sequel following the grandchild of Egon Spangler, an original Ghostbuster. It’s not that they are bad movies, but the original one is better.
Number 3: The Addams Family
The original Addams family was published in 1938 with ‘The New Yorker’ as comics, created by American cartoonist, Charles Addams. This inspired the comedical 1960’s TV show series, The Addams Family, which I personally find very entertaining. Then in 1991 they decided to make it a great movie, the one I will be talking about! But, then they made another movie, and another, a few more cartoons and so on… Personally I doubt they’ll ever stop
The Addams family is an extremely wacky, peculiar and violent family who confuse and terrify the “normal” people in their town. In this movie, the familys’ lawyer was in deep financial trouble and being hunted by a loanshark. When he is confronted by his lender and did not have the money, he told her about The Addams Family's enormous fortune.Shortly after, the layer realized that her son looks nearly identical to the Addams long-lost-brother! So they try to think up a plan to get into the house and find the vault and steal the fortune. But, the families strange, aggressive mannerisms make fitting into the family a bit more difficult than they realized.
